It has been shown to increase productivity, not to mention the health benefits of the dopamine hit we get from it.
People who own pets also tend to live longer, which also increases productivity.

Am I correct in surmising that pet owners offer a positive externality to society? We are benefitting society and making the world a better place by making our world better with our little fur babies.
